The 2012 CrossFit Games began on February 22nd. In the European division, there are currently five women from Iceland in the top ten positions, mbl.is reports.
The official website for the CrossFit Games has published an article which raises the question of what qualities Icelandic women have in common which gets them so far, other than having names that end with –dóttir (“-daughter”). <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
On the top of the list of European participants is none other than Annie Mist Þórisdóttir who currently holds the title of “The World’s Fittest Women”. The other Icelandic participants in the top ten places are Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir, 2nd place, Þuríður Erla Helgadóttir, 3rd place, Hjördís Óskarsdóttir, 5th place, and Björg Óðinsdóttir, tied for 9th place.
The current score on the leaderboard can be viewed here (choose Division: Individual Women, Region: Europe).
The article, entitled “The Icelandic Advantage”, states that Icelandic contestants are easily recognizable as their names all end with –dóttir. They must however have more things in common, but the author of the article says that everyone has their own theory about the secret behind the fitness of Icelandic women. Some say it is simply in their genes. Others say it is the attitude; the Icelandic contestants have a mental strength and demand much from themselves.
Perhaps the Secret Ingredient is in the Blue Lagoon?
The columnist of the CrossFit site tells his readers that there is however no reason to give up. “Your dad doesn't have to be named after a hammer-wielding god of thunder for you to be good at CrossFit,“ he says, referring to Annie Mist’s father, Þórir.
The open segment of the CrossFit Games 2012 continues until March 25th. Then the regionals are held from April-May and the finals are in California on July 13th-15th.
