The snowboard competition AK Extreme will be held in Akureyri for the sixth time this weekend—it has been held in the north Icelandic town with intermissions since 2002. As in 2011, musical events will take place alongside the winter sports.

The program kicks off tonight; concerts will be held at three locations, Græni hatturinn, Pósthúsbarinn and Kaffi Akureyri, April 12-14, as revealed in a press release.
Snowboarding has been gaining popularity in Iceland in the past years and Akureyri natives have made names for themselves among the world’s best snowboarders.
AK Extreme has invited 16 snowboarders to participate in this year’s contest and tough competition is expected in the Eimskip Big Jump where contesters fight for the AK Extreme “golden ring”.
Last year 7,000 people attended the contest won convincingly by Gulli Guðmunds.
A Burn Jib contest will be held in the town center’s pedestrian zone where an equally tough competition is expected.
The Burn Jib begins tomorrow at 7 pm and the Big Jump is scheduled for April 14 at 8 pm in Gilið, the steep street leading out of the town center. Admission is free.
Among bands and musicians that will perform during the festival are Agent Fresco, BlazRoca, Oculus, The Vintage Caravan, Endless Dark, Elín Ey and Þórunn Antonía.
