Six hundred and fifty-nine MPs voted for the new regulation, 11 against and seven abstained, ruv.is reports. The agreement includes quantitative restrictions on the importation of fish including mackerel into the EU.

According to the European Commission, mackerel fishing is estimated to be 36 percent higher in 2012 than the levels deemed sustainable for the stock.
