State Grants Vestmannaeyjar Volcano Museum ISK 10 Million

This week marks the 40th anniversary of the volcanic eruption on Heimaey, the only inhabited island of the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, which began unexpectedly during the night of January 23, 1973.

Around half of the town’s buildings were either buried in lava or ash, or were destroyed in some other way, during the eruption.

The museum, which is centered on a house excavated out of a 15-meter thick layer of pumice as part of the ‘Pompei of the North’ project, is scheduled to open in summer 2014.
