Nature Reserve in Icelandic Highlands Extended

Minister for the Environment Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson was planning to sign a nature protection agreement on Friday, extending the nature reserve Þjórsárver in the central highlands to a total of 1,563 square kilometers.

The goal is to guarantee a wide-reaching and systematic protection of the vegetation in Þjórsárver, its ecosystem, breeding grounds for pink-footed geese and landscape, Fréttablaðið reports on June 21.

Þjórsárver includes marshes and grassy plains between the glacier Hofsjökull and highland plateau Sprengisandur, as stated on Wikipedia.

One third of all pink-footed geese in the world breed in the nature reserve. It is also unique in Iceland as the vegetated area is at an altitude of 600 meters.
