A total of 75 fin whales have been caught in Iceland this summer. According to Gunnlaugur F. Gunnlaugsson, director of the whaling station Hvalstöðin in Hvalfjörður, West Iceland, this has proven a very successful whaling season in spite of foggy weather in the past weeks.

“There is plenty to do in Hvalstöðin around the clock,” Gunnlaugur told Morgunblaðið. Between 150 and 160 people are employed at the whaling station. Gunnlaugur added that this summer’s whaling season is only half-way through.
The fin whale meat is destined for the Japanese market. However, foreign shipping companies have proven reluctant to ship it and after the last cargo of whale meat was sent back from the harbor in Hamburg, Icelandic shipping company Samskip announced that it will not be involved in further export of fin whale meat.
