Two individuals have been allocated land for the project, ruv.is reports. If realized, the farm will be twice the size of the largest existing mink farm in Iceland.
One of the prospective mink farmers, Stefán Jónsson, says that the project will be extensive. “The plan is to have 10,000 females and the building on 2.5 hectares of land,” he said, adding that the farm will be built up in stages over the next four years.
According to Stefán, the price of mink skins has increased rapidly in recent years. The resources, he says, are mostly domestic while the returns are in foreign currency, making the business particularly profitable.
