Icelandic weightlifter Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who placed third in the World’s Strongest Man competition last month, will play Gregor Clegane, or ‘The Mountain,’ in the fourth series of Game of Thrones, as he announced on his Facebook page yesterday.
“For all my fans! I am happy to tell you that I will be THE MOUNTAIN In season 4 In Game Of Thrones! I’m now In Croatia filming for the next season,” he wrote.
Clegane, who is tall and muscular, plays a big part in the story. He is the chief of the Clegane tribe from Westerland and is in constant struggle with his older brother Sandor who once scorched his face, visir.is reports.
Hafþór will be the third actor to portray Clegane. He was originally played by Conan Stevens and later Ian Whyte.
Hafþór has garnered widespread attention in recent months. Visir.is reported earlier this summer that Jim Irsay, owner of the NFL team Indianapolis Colts, had expressed interest in recruiting Hafþór to American football.
Hafþór, who is 205 cm (6.72 ft.) tall and weighs 170 kg (375 lbs), has earned the title Iceland’s strongest man and the world’s third strongest man at only 24.
