Sea Ice Conference Concludes in Iceland

The importance of good information on sea ice to secure the safety of seafarers was emphasized at the International Ice Charting Working Group conference, which concludes in Reykjavík today.

The group is one of the primary international group bringing together experts on sea ice, Morgunblaðið reports.

Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir from the University of Iceland said that the working group is particularly concerned that although sea ice cover is shrinking, there are big differences between years and areas. “People have ended up in all sorts of problems when they assume that the ice is the same from one year to another but it is absolutely not. On top of this, there is a large increase in shipping traffic in the Arctic which also creates dangers,” she said.

Around 55 international guests as well as Icelandic experts attended the conference.
