Heavy snow with zero visibility is forecast for the two main mountain passes, Holtavörðuheiði and Brattabrekka, connecting North and West Iceland to the rest of Iceland.
A sandstorm is now raging at Skeiðarársandur near Skaftafell, Southeast Iceland, connecting South Iceland to the eastern part of the island. Closer to the capital, by Eyjafjöll mountain and in the Mýrdalur area close to Vík, South Iceland, travelers can expect winds of up to 144 km/h (90 miles/h).
In East Iceland the roads are slippery and covered in snow.
The mountain pass, Hrafnseyrarheiði, connecting the northern and southern parts of the West Fjords, is closed due heavy snowfall.
The ferry Herjólfur, connecting Vestmannaeyjar (the Westman Islands) with the mainland, is not sailing today due to the strong winds in South Iceland.
