Reykjavík Mayor Jón Gnarr was in Oslo, Norway, yesterday evening to cut down a Christmas tree, a gift from Norway, according to a long-standing tradition.

The tree is now being transported to Iceland and will be lit at a ceremony on Austurvöllur square on the first Sunday in Advent, December 1.
The tree chosen was 42 years old and 18 meters high but it was cut at 12 meters in order to fit in the shipping container. The rest will be used for another purpose.
The tree was chosen 10 years ago and has since received special attention from forestry workers.
