A three-year-old boy from Selfoss, Reykdal Máni Magnússon, defeated the so-called mannanafnanefnd, the committee in charge of determining the legitimacy of Icelandic given names on Thursday.Photo: Páll Stefánsson/Iceland Review.
The committee concluded that the given name Reykdal went against the Icelandic language system while granting that many had carried the name before him, for example Reykdal Máni’s grandfather, Reykdal Magnússon, inhabitant of Selfoss, South Iceland.
The parents of the toddler filed suit on his behalf. Until now, he has been registered in official documents as ‘boy’ Magnússon.
“This is a lovely Christmas present,” his father, Magnús Ninni Reykdalsson, told rúv.is.
