Around 2,000 foreign tourists were in Iceland over Christmas with visitors from Britain making up the largest group followed by tourists from Asia. According to ruv.is, most tourists planned to go on whale watching and northern lights tours.

Four years ago, most hotels and restaurants were closed during the holiday period but now many remain open as well as there being many organized tours on offer to cater for the increasing number of visitors to Iceland during this time.
There were also many visitors in Reykjavík for New Year’s Eve. Up to 2,000 people were booked on northern lights tours last night.
