Eight new beers have gone on sale for the old winter month of Þorri, a new record, mbl.is reports.
Þorri was the name of the fourth winter month in the old Icelandic calendar and runs from mid-January to mid-February. Traditional Icelandic food is eaten at this time of year, washed down with beer or brennivín, Icelandic schnapps.
The beer Hvalur, which contains ground whale bones, has also gone on sale after the companies behind the beer were given permission to carry on after production was halted in mid-January. The West Iceland Public Health Authority had concluded that whaling company Hvalur ehf., which teamed up with Icelandic brewery Steðji to make the beer, was not licensed to produce bone meal for edible consumption. However, the companies are now allowed to sell the beer during Þorri.
The other new beers include Þorra Kaldi, Þorra Þræll, Kvæsir NR22, Einiberja Bock, Surtur NR23, Þorragull, and Þorrabjór.
