Last year a total of 781,000 foreign tourists went through Keflavík International Airport, an increase of 20 percent, or 135,000 people.
In Reykjavík an additional 1,100 hotel rooms are currently being built, ruv.is reports. The biggest hotel under construction is at Höfðatorg, near Höfði House, with 350 rooms. The first five star hotel in Iceland, with 250 rooms, will be built next to Harpa concert and conference center at the old harbor.
A hotel with 160 rooms is also being built in the old headquarters of Landssíminn, the former national telecom company, opposite Alþingi parliament at Austurvöllur square.
Icelandair is constructing two hotels in downtown Reykjavík, one near Hlemmur, the other at the old harbor.
According to the Icelandic Tourist Board, there was a 40 percent year-on-year increase in tourists in January.
