An estimated 3,000 people are gathered outside Alþingi, Iceland’s parliament, to protest the government’s plans to withdraw from EU accession talks without putting the matter to a referendum.

This is the second day in a row that protests have taken place. The protests follow the vote by the majority of members in the parliamentary groups of the ruling coalition parties, the Independence and Progressive Parties, in favor of stopping European Union membership talks last week.

The decision has received widespread criticism with many arguing that the nation should have the chance to vote on the matter in a national referendum with around 26,000 people signing a petition calling for the right to vote.
