A concert in support of the gay and lesbian community in Uganda will be held in Harpa concert hall in Reykjavík tonight.
Among the performers are Páll Óskar Hjálmtýrsson, Hinsegin kórinn (The Gay Choir), Sigga Beinteins og Stjórnin, Sykur and Retro Stefson. The artists are donating their earnings to human rights in Uganda with proceeds going to Ugandan grassroots organizations working with the LGBT community.
The concert is being organized by Amnesty International, the National Queer Organization (Samtökin ’78) and students at the University of Iceland.
The Foreign Minister of Iceland Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson recently released a statement deploring the President of Uganda’s decision to sign an Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which further criminalizes homosexuality and makes it punishable by up to life imprisonment.
