MP Visits Geysir without Paying Fee

Ögmundur Jónasson, MP for the Left-Greens and former Interior Minister, visited Geysir yesterday without paying the new ISK 600 (USD 5, EUR 4) entrance fee. Ögmundur had called on others to join him in visiting Geysir to protest the fee.

Airport Staff in Iceland to Strike

Eighty-eight percent of the members of the three unions with employees at ISAVIA, the company which the operates airports in Iceland, voted in favor of holding four short strikes, closing all airports in Iceland and disrupting all air traffic to and from Iceland.

Northern lights at Þingvellir National Park

Northern Lights Research Center to be Enlarged

The Chinese government will pay ISK 300 million to extend the northern lights research station in Reykjadalur, Northeast Iceland, which the government-run Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC) helped set up.

Icelandic adventurer Vilborg Arna Gissurardóttir left yesterday for Nepal, where she plans to set off on her journey up Everest.


Earth Hour 2014 Celebrated in Iceland

Reykjavík City is taking part in the global Earth Hour today. Lights in the capital will be turned off at 8:30 pm. A concert with Ragnheiðar Gröndal and Pálmi Gunnarsson will take place in Háskólatorg to mark the event.
