Boy Beats Father to Become Icelandic Tennis Champion

Rafn Kumar Bonifacius won in the Icelandic Tennis Championships on the weekend, beating his father Raj Bonifacius 6:3 and 6:3. Anna Soffía Grönholm was the women’s singles winner, beating Hjördís Rósa Guðmundsdóttir 4:6, 6:3, 8:6.

In other sport news, Iceland won against Belgium 3:1 at the 2014 Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships Division II Group B in Laugardalur Arena in Reykjavík. Iceland ended the competition in fourth place, after Croatia, Slovenia and Spain, but above Belgium and last-placed Turkey.

In women’s basketball, Snæfell from Stykkishólmur won 59:50 against Haukar from Hafnarfjörður in the first game in the Icelandic Championships playoffs. The game took place in a packed stadium; 400 spectators in a town of 1,000. Three wins are needed to secure the top spot. The teams play again tonight.

In gymnastics, Bjarki Ásgeirsson from team Ármann won the Icelandic Men’s Championships in Gymnastics with 78,450 points. Valgarð Reinharðsson from team Gerpla placed second with 77,850 points and Jón Sigurður Gunnarsson, also from Ármann, finished third with 74,650 points.

Norma Dögg Róbertsdóttir from Gerpla won the Icelandic Women’s Championships in Gymnastics with 47,950 points. Agnes Suto, also from Gerpla, came second with 47,650 points and Thelma Rut Hermansdóttir, also from Gerpla, was third with 46,950 points.
