The road between the northern and southern West Fjords is being cleared after having been closed since December due to heavy snowfall, RÚV reports.

Once the mountain passes Hrafnseyrarheiði and Dynjandisheiði reopen, the journey between Bíldudalur and Þingeyri will be shortened by 420 kilometers. The cleanup was expected to take four days.

According to Gunnar, who has been clearing the road every year for the last 40 years, the buildup of snow has only once been greater, in 1995.

Footage of the snow buildup can be seen here.
