Good Friday, or Föstudagurinn langi (‘Long Friday’) in Icelandic, is a bank holiday in Iceland and part of Easter celebrations. It commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and is a day of mourning.

Good Friday is the saddest day of the church calendar. Flags are flown at half-mast and many people go to church. People are discouraged from having fun on this day and clubs do not open until after midnight, when the day has officially ended.

According to the website of the State Church in Iceland, kirkjan.is, Christians should reflect on their faith and pray on Good Friday.

“Talk less, pray more. Good Friday is the gate that we pass through in order to celebrate Easter in the glory of the resurrection of the Lord,” as phrased in old church books.
