Airport Workers Strike Again

A continuing dispute between the Icelandic state and staff of Isavia, the country’s airports and air navigation service, means more strike action and flight delays this morning.

International flight arrivals and departures at Keflavík International Airport are delayed by three to four hours this morning, and disruption is expected to domino later into the day after the airport fully re-opens. Icelandair and WOW air have both adjusted their flight times accordingly.

RÚV reports that the latest round of Isavia and airport workers’ contract negotiations yielded no result, despite marathon talks with the state mediator yesterday. The parties are said to be a long way from compromise and another meeting is scheduled for 15.00 this afternoon.

Isavia staff members downed tools last night, in accordance with their threatened strike between 04.00 and 09.00 this morning.

All commercial flights in Iceland are affected and domestic flights from Reykjavík Airport will not be able to start running before 09.00 GMT.

The airlines are not directly involved in the strike action and are all staying off-record with their opinions on the dispute. Despite the considerable inconvenience, all passengers booked to fly can still expect to do so.
