Monday’s serious fire at a Reykjavík school was started by a 12-year-old boy, police have confirmed.

The two prefabricated classrooms at Rimaskóli school caught on fire because a young boy was playing with fire, capital region police have said.

The two classrooms were razed to the ground, but luckily nobody was hurt. The classrooms were empty at the time and the school’s pupils were ushered into the sports hall.

The police are satisfied that arson was not the motive for the blaze and that the boy caused the fire by accident, DV.is reports.

The matter has been discussed carefully with the boy and his parents, with the assistance of child protection authorities.
