The police in Húsavík, Northeast Iceland, fined tourists who called search and rescue after their rental SUV’s front wheel got stuck in a fissure on Wednesday, mbl.is reports.
The tourists had traveled from the southern side of Lake Mývatn to Hverarönd, east of the lake. The nature in this area is particularly fragile.
The road was impassable due to snow so the travelers made the decision to drive off-road, instead of turning back.
The police said the tourists were lucky to have escaped unharmed.
It is forbidden to drive off-road in Iceland.
