Iceland is the fourth best country to be a mother, according to the 2014 Mother’s Index by Save the Children. Finland is in top spot followed by Norway and Sweden. Australia is the only country outside Europe to make the top 10. Somalia is last on the list.

This is the 15th time that Save the Children publishes its annual State of the World’s Mothers Report. The 2014 research highlighted “how critical and difficult the mother-child connection is during a humanitarian crisis, when families’ lives are thrown into turmoil.”

Indicators consist of lifetime risk of maternal death, under-5 mortality rate, expected number of years of formal schooling, gross national income (GNI) per capita and participation of women in national government.
