Ísafjörður Town Council has suggested that low-flying flights be banned from Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the West Fjords so as not to disturb birdlife and tourists in the area.

Ásbjörn Björgvinsson, head of the Icelandic Tourism Association, told Rás 2 radio that tourism activities in the area need to be better coordinated. He said that some companies offer activities emphasizing the tranquility of the area while others operate speed boats or low-flying flight tours without discussing it with the other party.

Ásbjörn suggests that certain rules be implemented and that low-flying flights and speed boats be prohibited in certain areas. “Especially near bird cliffs and other places where there is a lot of bird life.”

Hornstrandir is an increasingly popular tourist destination.
