An 18-year-old Icelandic boy traveling with his parents and a friend died in an accident in the amusement park Terra Mítica in Benidorm, Spain, yesterday. Spanish authorities notified the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs about the accident last night.

The boy fell from a roller coaster called Inferno, which is 25 meters (82 feet) high and runs at a speed of up to 96 km (60 miles) per hour. The accident is being investigated by Alicante police authorities, ruv.is reports.

Kristín Tryggvadóttir, the Icelandic group’s guide, said people are in shock.

She added that Terra Mítica is a large amusement park which opened 14 years ago. Hundreds of people enter the park every day during peak season and safety standards are generally considered to be in order.

A statement from Terra Mítica reads that all rides are checked regularly and that the police have been given all documentation about the roller coaster. It says that the cause of the accident is unknown and that the staff’s thoughts are with the deceased’s family.
