The number of sexual offenses, against children in particular, increased in 2013. Never before have so many children sought the assistance of Barnahús, the Center for Child Sexual Abuse, as in 2013, visir.is reports.

Reported sexual offenses against children rose from 37 in 2010 to 64 in 2012 and 113 in 2013. Half of the children who visited Barnahús for an interview in 2013 were under the age of 11.

According to Bragi Guðbransson, head of the Government Agency for Child Protection, the rise in such cases is connected to the increase in young children’s use of the internet.

In total, there were 416 sexual offences reported in the capital in 2013. In comparison, there were 66 reported cases in 2010, 81 in 2011, 84 in 2012 and 114 in 2013.

Cases of prostitution totaled 98 in 2013, up from 22 in 2012. Visir.is points out that the Icelandic police conducted a special operation against prostitution last year.

At the same time, cases of child pornography rose from 17 in 2012 to 21 last year.
