Stjarnan (‘The Star’) from Garðabær, a town outside Reykjavík, lost 3-0 against Inter Milan in Reykjavík last night. The match between the two teams was the first of two for a place in the European League.
Stjarnan held strong until the 41st minute before Mauro Icardi broke through with the opening goal. Dodo added a second just after the break and then substitute Danilo D’Ambrosio scored the third late in the game.
The second game takes place in Milan on August 28.
Inter won the Champions League four years ago while Stjarnan is playing to become the first Icelandic team to make it to the European League.
To secure the game against Inter, Stjarnan played and won three teams, first against Bangor from Wales, then the Scottish team Motherwell and finally Lech Poznan.
