The operation management of the Department of Civil Protection in Húsavík has decided to reopen the road Hólsfjallavegur (864) east of Dettifoss waterfall, which is located east of Jökulsárgljúfur canyon, extending from Ring Road 1 to road 85.
However, the Dettifoss road west of Jökulsárgljúfur (862) remains closed, ruv.is reports.
Travelers are now also permitted to visit Ásbyrgi canyon, another popular destination in the region.
These areas were closed following the news of a possible volcanic eruption in Bárðarbunga on Saturday.
Further observations found that an eruption did not occur. The alert phase was subsequently lowered and the volcano and surrounding areas are being monitored closely.
