The Icelandic Coast Guard surveillance plane TF-SIF flew over the eruption site this morning.

The crew took the above thermal image of the fissure. According to the Coast Guard, the fissure measures 900 meters (3,000 feet) in length and is 5 km (3 miles) from Dyngjujökull, Vatnajökull outlet glacier.

A fissure eruption started in Holuhraun, north of Dyngjujökull glacier, at 00:02 this morning.

The Icelandic Met Office lowered the aviation color code over Bárðarbunga volcano to orange from red earlier this morning. All airports in Iceland are open.
