Þórey Vilhjálmsdóttir, assistant to Minister of the Interior Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir, is suing DV journalists Jón Bjarki Magnússon and Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson for libelous comments and crass insinuations towards her in connection with the so-called leak affair.

“The reason [for the lawsuit] is DV’s coverage on June 20 which wrongly stated that I had ‘leaked’ confidential information about an asylum seeker to the media and also that I was ‘employee B’ in Reykjavík District Court’s verdict in said leak affair,” Þórey explained in a statement, published on mbl.is on Friday.

Þórey reasoned that the journalists in question had specifically worked towards painting a picture of her as someone guilty of a punishable act and serious violation in her work, which has damaged her reputation and caused her and her family great concern.

Þórey would now like to clear her reputation and also hopes that the lawsuit will help to improve the future work methods of journalists at DV. She stressed that she is paying the legal fees from her own pocket and that all damages will go towards charitable causes.
