Minister of the Interior Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir will step down today, ruv.is reported just now. According to the national broadcaster’s sources, the minister is planning to take a break from politics and return to parliament in January. It’s unclear who will replace her.

Hanna Birna has been under pressure to resign ever since confidential information was leaked from her ministry one year ago. Pressure mounted last week after her political assistant, Gísli Freyr Valdórsson, confessed to having leaked the information and was handed an eight-month suspended prison sentence.

Following the ruling, the Independence Party, of which Hanna Birna is vice-chair, declared their unified support for her to maintain her position in government and Hanna Birna stated that she intended to complete the term as interior minister. However, according to RÚV’s sources, she will announce her resignation to the party today.

It is assumed that Hanna Birna will continue as the party’s vice-chair.

Update: Hanna Birna confirmed the news shortly after 3 pm.
