Twenty-Eight People Receive Asylum in 2014

A total of 28 individuals received asylum in Iceland in 2014, up from 11 in 2013, while five individuals received protection on humanitarian grounds, compared to one in 2013.

Head of the Directorate of Immigration Kristín Völundardóttir explained to ruv.is that the reason for the higher number of positive applications is that more asylum seekers, from more countries, sought refuge in Iceland last year.

Individuals from 45 countries sough asylum in Iceland in 2014, compared to 34 in 2013. The highest number came from Albania, followed by Ukraine, Russia and Iraq.
