The above overview map by the University of Iceland Institute of Earth Sciences, published on January 10, shows progressive additions to the new lava field in Holuhraun since January 1. The lava now covers 84.1 square km (32.5 square miles), an area the size of Manhattan.

The new lava field has crossed the track Dyngjufjallaleið and extended into the older lava of Þorvaldshraun, the Icelandic Met Office reports.

The above thermal image by the Institute of Earth Sciences shot in the early hours of January 8 shows quite well where the main volcanic activity is currently taking place (the outlines of the new lava field are based on a map from January 5).
