The seven travelers, five adults and two children, whose jeeps became stuck in the northern highlands last night, are now on their way to Akureyri accompanied by emergency vehicles. They are unharmed.

Search and rescue volunteers helped loosen the two jeeps that were stuck and the third jeep, which had broken down, is being towed into town, mbl.is reports.

The ICE-SAR search and rescue member associations Súlur, Dalbjörg and Þingey participated in the operation, which began at 9 pm yesterday evening.

The people had contacted emergency services after running into trouble approximately 5 km (3 miles) east of Laugafell. Because of the two children a helicopter was sent to the scene, but it had to return due to poor visibility.

Four emergency vehicles drove off last night but due to difficult driving conditions and one of the vehicles breaking down a snowmobile was also called out. It arrived at the scene at around 7:30 this morning.
