Iceland was represented by Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson and Mayor of Reykjavík Dagur B. Eggertsson at a memorial ceremony in Copenhagen yesterday evening, held to honor the victims of last weekend’s terrorist attacks.
Thousands participated in the ceremony, including the Icelandic officials’ counterparts in the other Nordic countries. “It was a moving moment. The weekend’s attacks have had a great impact on everyone here and it touched me profoundly how determined everyone is in not letting it cause conflicts between people, regardless of what religion they adhere to,” Gunnar Bragi said in a statement.
This morning he met with Danish Foreign Minister Martin Lidegaard.
Dagur wrote in a condolences letter to Mayor of Copenhagen Frank Jensen that Icelanders’ thoughts were with the residents of the Danish capital, the victims of the attack and their friends and families. “We must stand united in protecting an open and free democratic system—and against the pointless violence we witnessed last Saturday.”
