One of Iceland’s top skiers, María Guðmundsdóttir, was pleased with placing 36th in slalom at the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail and Beaver Creak in the U.S., February 2-15. She placed 52nd at World Cup two years ago. In the meantime, she injured her knee, missing the 2014 Olympics in Stotsji, Russia.

“Thirty-sixth place is excellent and I can be pleased with the achievement. It’s a great improvement since the last World Cup, both in rank and in time compared to the winner. It’s very positive and it shows that the experience of having competed at a major tournament before is important,” María told Vísir.

Both María and fellow Icelandic skier Helga María Vilhjálmsdóttir improved their time since the last World Cup. “The [Icelandic] Ski Association has a good program and a national team coach who enable us to practice without distractions and there are several skiers now who are on their way up, giving all,” María stated.
