U.S President Barack Obama accepted Geir H. Haarde’s letter of credence at a ceremony at the White House yesterday, formally appointing Geir, former prime minister of Iceland and leader of the Independence Party, as Iceland’s new ambassador to the U.S.

Geir took office in January, succeeding Guðmundur Árni Stefánsson, ruv.is reports.

Last summer the Icelandic Foreign Ministry announced that Geir would be appointed ambassador and it soon turned out that he would serve in Washington DC.

Former MP for the Left-Greens Árni Þór Sigurðsson’s appointment as ambassador was announced at the same time, although his destination remains unclear. He is rumored to serve in Moscow.
