When Geir Ola Korsnes from Tofterøy in Sund near Bergen in West Norway found his boat smashed up by a storm, he also found a plastic bottle with a letter inside. The letter had been written by 11-year-old Björgvin Matthías from Skagaströnd in North Iceland on April 1, 1999.

As Björgvin had requested in the letter that the finder contact him, Korsnes posted a picture of the bottle and letter on his Facebook page and shared it with some Icelanders he knew. They shared it with their friends until an acquaintance of Björgvin tagged him. Björgvin confirmed to Korsnes that he had tossed the bottle into the ocean from Iceland 16 years ago, mbl.is reports.

“It’s impossible to know where the bottle has gone. Maybe it made a stopover in Greenland, the Faroe Islands or even in the sea ice off the North Pole,” Korsnes speculated. “Many strange things wash up the beach when a storm is raging. Once I found a whole glass window which I could use.”
