Four British hikers contacted the emergency services early this morning. They had intended to cross the highlands by taking the Kjölur road, which is open for cars in the summer, but after four days in snowy conditions they had become cold and exhausted and were unable to continue.

The ICE-SAR search and rescue association Blanda in Blönduós, North Iceland, was called out at 7:45 am and reached the hikers at 9:30 am, where they were staying in their tents near Arnarbælistjörn, mbl.is reports.

Conditions were snowy and windy and the temperature -10°C (14°F). The group was reportedly happy to be driven back to Blönduós, from where they intended to take the bus to Reykjavík.
