Search and rescue services were called out to Holtavörðuheiði pass, on the Ring Road between North and South Iceland, yesterday when a 12-car pileup occurred in bad weather, visir.is reports.

Three people were taken to hospital in Reykjavík. The individuals are not in a critical condition. A policeman who was directing traffic was also injured after being hit by a car and thrown 20 meters (65 feet). He was taken for treatment in Hvammstangi but is also not in a critical condition, mbl.is reports.

Cars which had become stuck had to be towed from the pass.

Search and rescue were also called out last night to assist two tourists who became stuck in their car on Steingrímsfjarðarheiði in the West Fjords.

Snowfall and snowdrifts coupled with stormy weather made for difficult driving conditions in parts of Iceland yesterday.
