There have been an unusually high number of callouts due to wildfires in the Reykjavík capital region over the last week—over 20, in fact.

It is thought mischievous children are starting some or most of the fires, including one callout at 03.00 yesterday to Stekkjahraun, near Setbergsskóli school in Hafnarfjörður, Vísir reports.

Two fire engines were sent to the scene and firefighters were met by fires burning over a large area. The firefighters were quick to put it out, however.
Sigurður Þorsteinsson, one of the firemen at the scene, said that it was difficult to work in the terrain at times, as the fire was burning in an area mostly covered in lava and moss.

It is believed that children lit that fire and the capital fire brigade has been called out over 20 times in a week for similar events.

“Regrettably it is mostly damage to vegetation, and that is bad,” Sigurður says—adding that the number of callouts is very high for the time of year.
