Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson still has cake on his mind. In an interview on eyjan.is he said that he had recently begun a physical fitness program and when he was offered a cake in parliament, he had to have half a piece.

Last night the PM published the accompanying photo with the caption: “The government is two years old and Eurovision on the same day. One can hardly find a better reason to have cake.”

Opposition MPs were upset when Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson left the parliament’s floor in the middle of a debate recently, allegedly to eat cake. They accused him of being disrespectful.

Our columnist Vala Hafstad wrote the following poem:

Discussions are such a bore
And questions I do abhor.
I barely can stay awake.
Just give me a piece of cake.

You criticize things I do
And say I don’t care for you.
Just give me a bloody break.
I know I have earned my cake.

My job is to work for you.
There’s much that I need to do.
Some nights I must stay awake.
It isn’t a piece of cake.

You say you don’t trust your chief.
My message to you is brief:
Stop whining, for goodness’ sake—
Just trust me, I like my cake.
