A new opponent has been found for Iceland’s Ultimate Fighting Championship star, Gunnar Nelson, following his scheduled opponent’s recent injury.
UFC 189 will take place in Las Vegas on July 11 and Gunnar Nelson was left without a fight, after John Hathaway had to pull out due to injury. However, Gunnar will now fight Brandon Thatch, it has been announced.
Vísir reports that Thatch is a 29-year-old American who is ranked higher than Hathaway. According to Haraldur Nelson, Gunnar’s father and manager, this will make for a more exciting spectacle.
Thatch was scheduled to fight somebody else that evening but has been moved up the schedule to pit himself against Gunnar.
Thatch is relatively new to the UFC; having won two fights and lost one. In his MMA career he has won eleven and lost just two.
Gunnar’s record is 13 wins to one loss.
In addition to changes to the Icelander’s fight, the headline bout between Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor is also in doubt, as Aldo has broken a rib during training.
