Representatives of the City of Reykjavík and LGBT rights association Samtökin ’78 signed an agreement on Friday including a funding of ISK 15 million (USD 113,000, EUR 102,000) for three years to the association for organizing LGBT rights education in the city’s elementary schools.

The association will educate the schools’ staff and students about LGBT rights with the long-term goal of the schools taking over the education program, ruv.is reports.

The program also includes interviews with consultants for LGBT people of all ages and their families and support groups for young LGBT people.

“The agreement is an important part of supporting the association further in its fight against ignorance and prejudice and it will hopefully encourage the state and other municipalities to make similar agreements,” commented Líf Magneudóttir, chair of the city’s Human Rights Council.

“Reykjavík City is demonstrating its support for the fight of LGBT people,” said chair of Samtökin ’78 Hilmar Hildarson Magnúsarson, adding that it was especially pleasing to sign the agreement on the day that same-sex marriage was made legal in the U.S.
