An American couple have decided to name their two-week-old son after Icelandic mixed martial artist and Ultimate Fighting Championship star, Gunnar Nelson.
The mother told reporters that she and her partner decided on the name after watching several televised fights on the night and were impressed by how strong and powerful a name Gunnar is.
Stephanie Ann Kenealy told Gunnar Nelson the news directly in a Facebook post, saying that her son is very sick and that doctors have yet to find out what is wrong with him. She says that the child must fight for his life, and that is why she chose the name Gunnar: the name of a fighter, RÚV reported.
Gunnar answered Stephanie, saying it is an honor to bear the same name as her beautiful son, “Carry on fighting, friend. My thoughts are with you and your family.”
Stephanie’s original message reads:
“After a few months of name searching... one night after watching some fights my husband and I decided that Gunnar was it. No going back, it was strong and powerful.
Now a background my husband is very involved in our local martial arts community and has trained and judged and even mentored young fighters from boxing, to close combat military, stick fighting, wrestling, kick boxing even hosting a Brazilian exchange student that happens to be a Black belt in jujitsu he is what I would call a good mix. He has earned the title Master but would never be caught dead bragging about it. He helped coach my son in wrestling which makes him proud. It makes me proud, my oldest boy is a walking wrestling blessing. He went from 3 brain surgeries to winning every match in less than 45 sec. Born to fight he wants nothing more than to be like his Dad. My oldest boy will never be able to do combat sports he cannot take blows to the head sooooooo here comes another boy. He is going to have the name of a fighter, Gunnar.
GUNNAR JAMES KENEALY was born 7/25/2015 and he is a fighter and he has no clue yet... he has yet to leave the hospital. He is extremely sick and the doctors cannot figure it out yet. After watching the last UFC I decided to post this.
Congrats on your last fight! I hope you have a great career!
Fighting is a natural instinct and Gunnar is a fighter’s name. He is going to fight!”
