Fatal Accident in South Iceland

A fatal car accident occurred on the ring road in South Iceland close to Pétursey shortly after 3:00 pm yesterday, Vísir reports. Four foreign tourists were traveling in the car when the accident occurred. A passenger was declared dead at the scene. The driver, who is seriously injured, was transported by the Icelandic coast guard helicopter to the emergency care at Landspítali University Hospital. The injuries of other passengers were less serious.

How the accident happened is unclear, but it’s under investigation by the South Iceland police. No further information is available.

Update:

The driver who was transported by helicopter yesterday is doing better and being taken off a respirator, RÚV reports. The passenger who died in the accident was a woman.

The South Iceland police ask witnesses to the accident to please come forward.
