Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir will head the Foreign Affairs Committee of Alþingi, RÚV reports. This was unanimously agreed on during a party group meeting of the Independence Party today. Birgir Ármannson is stepping down as chairman of the committee, but will instead take over as vice chairman of Alþingi’s Constitutional and Supervisory Committee.
Hann Birna resigned as Minister for the Interior in November of last year, following the so-called “Leak Affair,” in which sensitive, confidential information about an asylum seeker was leaked from her ministry to the news media. She took time off from parliamentary duties, but came back last spring as a Member of Parliament. She told RÚV yesterday that unless something unexpected came up, she intended to seek reelection as vice chairman of the Independence Party at the party’s general meeting at the end of October.
