The Icelandic national women’s football team defeated Belarus 2-0 in Laugardalur arena last night, RÚV reports. This was the team’s first game in Group 1 qualifying round for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2017, to be held in the Netherlands. The Icelandic team was by far the stronger team and played well throughout the game.
Hólmfríður Magnúsdóttir scored the first goal for Iceland about half an hour into the game. In the second half, Dagný Brynjarsdóttir scored the team’s second goal with a header, assisted by Hallbera Guðný Gísladóttir.
Iceland’s next game is against Macedonia October 22. The Icelandic team ranks 18th on FIFA’s list, published yesterday.
